Dengue fever, also known as break-bone fever which is caused by Dengue virus (DENV) and dengue virus spread through infective Aedes mosquitos.Â
Person who are living in the tropical and subtropical area are highly likely to get infected by dengue virus.Â
According to WHO report, estimated 500,000 people require hospitalization each year due to dengue.
Dengue is caused by four type of DENV serotypes i.e., DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3 and DENV-4, due to these four types of virus a person can be infected more than 4 times in his/her lifetime.
According to WHO, about half of the world's population is now at risk. There are an estimated 100-400 million infections each year.
The most possible symptoms of dengueÂ
- High fever(104 F),Â
- headache, pain (eye, muscle, joint, bone),Â
- nausea,Â
- vomiting,Â
- rash Â
Symptoms of dengue are classified in to three categories i.e., Mild dengue fever, Dengue hemorrhagic fever, Dengue shock syndrome.Â
- Mild dengue fever- These symptoms are seen after the week from the bite.
- Dengue Hemorrhagic fever- Symptoms are somewhere like to mild but it can worsen within a few days.Â
- Dengue shock syndrome- In this stage it may even cause death.Â
In dengue fever, it can result in dropping of white blood cells and platelets. platelets can go down as low as 20k to 40k (normal range of platelets 1.5 to 4 lacs). if platelets keep going down less than 20k then it may threaten your life.Â

Currently there is no specific treatment of dengue, doctor treat the patient according to their reports and symptoms
Prevention of DengueÂ
Currently there is no vaccine available for dengue prevention. So, you just have to prevent from mosquitoes bites.
Here are several tips to avoid mosquito bite
- Wear full length clothes to cover most of the body parts.Â
- Use mosquito repellents with at least 10% concentration of DEET (Diethyltoluamide).Â
- Close the windows and screenÂ
- Remove stagnant water
- remove excess water from plant pot
- scrub containers to remove mosquito eggs
- Keep change the water in flower plots in every alternate day.Â
- Try to avoid traveling to risk areas.Â
