Myopia is a type of refractive error which responsible for loss or blurring of vision and it is the leading cause of distance refractive error.Â
The number of myopic patient keep rising year by year, it is estimated that there are 2.56 billion people affecting with myopia worldwide.
It is very common, estimated 10 million cases come across from India.Â
What is myopia?
Myopia or shortsightedness is a type of refractive error in which rays focused in front of retina and person unable to see clear in distance.Â
Myopia is broadly classified in to two type :
- Non-pathological myopia
- Pathological myopia
What can cause myopia?
- increased corneal curvatureÂ
- increase axial length of eye
- anterior placement of crystalline lens
- Due to some ocular disease, like congenital glaucoma, ROP, Cataract, etc.Â
Risk factors
1. Genetic factors: Some studies have been shown that higher rate of myopia in children with myopic patient and if both the parents are myopic then higher chance of getting myopia in children.Â
2. Near work and reading: Study in 2008 has suggested the relation between high intensity near work and increased rated of myopia.Â
3. Accommodative lag: A study in 2004 has shown that the children with high myopia also had accommodative lag, but it doesn't represent that it can cause myopia.Â
4. Nutrition: A study in 2010 has shown that
Higher saturated fat and cholesterol intake are associated with
longer axial length.Â
Prevention of myopia naturally
 *Currently there are no proven or general guidelines for preventing myopia but there are some other ways which supposed to slow down the progression of myopia or protect your vision:
 1. Get your eye check-upÂ
The best way to slow down the progression of myopia is to get your eye check-up regularly to near by optometrist and wear best corrected glasses or contact lens.Â
2. Protect your eye form direct sun exposure
Direct sun exposure may hamper your eye as well, for better protection of your eyes always wear Sunglasses that block UV radiation, like Polarized lens.Â
3. Eat nutritious food
Nutritious foods are very important to your overall health. eat plenty of green vegetables and fruits that contains vitamin A in a adequate amount, which may help improve your eye sight.Â
4. Quit smoking
Smoking is not good for your eyes and eyesight as well, some studies have shown adverse effect of smoking on eye health.Â
5. Always wear best corrected glasses
Wearing right glasses is very important for your eyesight, over and under corrected glasses may progress the myopia.Â
6. Reduce eye strainÂ
Eyestrain may cause due to excessive near task, like reading, writing, work on laptop, to reduce the eye strain follow 20-20-20 rule, which means in every 20 minute, for 20 sec, look at something 20 feet away.
7. Limit the use of Digital gadget
Excessive use of digital gadget, like smartphone, laptop, desktop or tablet may cause computer vision syndrome.Â
