Don't get confuse with their name, it may sound same but they are not actually, they are totally different in appearance as well as in taste.  

Sweet potato and potato are both a root vegetable which come from separate plant families. both contains different nutrients and provide health benefits differently.

1. Calories

Per 100 gram of sweet potatoes contains only 90 calories and potatoes contains only 92 calories which does not help in weight gain(1). so if you want to loss some pound of weight you can add these food in your diet. 

2. Fat

Both sweet potatoes and potatoes contains very less amount of fat 0.15 gram. 

3. Protein

Sweet potatoes contains 2 gram of protein and potatoes also contains the same amount of protein. protein help prevent your unwanted craving and helps weight loss too. 

4. Fiber

Sweet potatoes contains 3.3g of fiber per 100 and potatoes contains 2.1 gram of fiber. fiber give the feeling of fullness which prevents craving and prevent weight gain and also boost the digestion. 

5. Glycemic Index 

The glycemic index is a value which use d to measure that how much specific foods increase the blood sugar levels in an individual. it is very important to know GI value of each food that you are consuming because the number of diabetic cases are rising are very high and GI directly link to them.

Potatoes contains more potassium than sweet potatoes, 17% and 10% respectively. potassium helps in muscle contraction, regulate nerve signals and fluid balance. 

7. Calcium

Sweet potatoes contains more calcium than potatoes, 3% and 1% respectively.

So as we know both the foods are different from each other and also beneficial for your health but in context of nutrition sweet potatoes has won the match because it contains less calories, glycemic index, more fiber than potatoes.
